Applied Bioplastics
Applied Bioplastics is a startup working to produce sustainable plant-based alternatives to plastic. The proprietary technology permanently fuses natural fiber and polypropylene to create strong plastic for the manufacturing industry.
It is developing affordable polymers with comparable or superior characteristics to conventional petrochemical plastics. These plastics use a large amount of plant material, which absorbs carbon dioxide and prevents CO2 emissions that are caused by petrochemical plastics.
The thermoplastic substitute replaces 30% of the petrochemical material, significantly lowering the carbon footprint. Due to the replaced petrochemical component, one ton of this material prevents 500 kg of CO2 emissions while also producing over 200 kg of CO2 uptake by the plant material.
The startup is prepared to transform the industry in a way that benefits both the natural environment and the people by reducing the volume of oil-based polymers required for almost any type of manufacturing, diverting waste cellulose from agriculture, and buying farmed cellulose from agricultural communities around the world.
It is among the 16 founding members of Greentown Labs and has recently finished the 2020 MassChallenge accelerator program in Austin, Texas. It was also named one of the winners of the Social & Culture category of SXSW Pitch 2021.
